Pre-Season Snow Leads to Crashes, Cancellations

File

An early blast of winter weather left roads slippery and forced many school systems in the Tri-State to cancel classes.

Rain began to change to sleet and snow in the Evansville area Monday afternoon, snow-clearing crews hit the roads, and school systems began cancelling classes for Tuesday.

Most of the Tri-State received one-to-two inches of snow, with isolated higher amounts.

Temperatures plunged into the teens, with single-digit wind chills.

The National Weather Service recorded a record low of 14 degrees in Evansville, easily beating the record of 17 set in 1911.

Crews began spreading melting materials on the roads Monday yesterday but the bitter cold temperatures made clearing the roads a challenge.

A number of accidents were reported during the morning commute, especially in Gibson and northern Vanderburgh counties.

A semi jackknifed on I-69 near Oakland City, blocking the southbound lanes for hours.

Sunny skies helped break-up the ice but another record low temperature is possible tonight.
