Melcher Returns To Evansville's City Council

An old face is back on the Evansville city council. A handful of local Republicans have chosen Steve Melcher to fill the seat vacated by John Hayden, who had to resign after moving outside the third ward.

Melcher was chosen at a caucus Monday night, but there really wasn’t much of a choice. He was the only person nominated, according to Vanderburgh County Republican Party Chairman Wayne Parke.

Melcher now returns to the seat he held for almost 20 years as a Democrat. He’s since changed parties and is running to represent the third ward again this fall. He’ll face Zachary Heronemus on the November ballot.

This was the second time the seat had become vacant in one four-year term.
