Mayor Seeking Expanded Police Merit Commission

In response to calls for police reform, Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke wants to expand the Police Merit Commission.

In a letter to the Evansville Fraternal Order of Police dated Monday and posted to Facebook Wednesday afternoon, Mayor Lloyd Winnecke requested that a committee be formed to discuss expanding the Evansville Police Merit Commission from three members to five. The letter was confirmed by WNIN.

In making the request, the mayor said that, “Given the broad discussion of police reforms, expanding our merit commission in this manner seems to be a practical, cooperative change that our community would widely embrace.”

The letter indicated the request was necessary based on the current collective bargaining agreement with the FOP.  It said that under state law, the makeup of a five member Evansville police merit commission would have two members appointed by the mayor, two by the FOP and one by the city council.
