Man accused of arson, possessing explosives

Jul 23, 2015

An Evansville man is accused of setting an early morning fire at Sugar Mill Creek Apartments and then taking a pipe bomb and a Molotov cocktail to a nearby McDonald’s.

Evansville Police rendered the two explosive devices safe - one by a controlled explosion outside the restaurant.

Sgt. Jason Cullum says breakfast diners inside the McDonald’s noticed 25-year-old Caleb Loving, who was wearing a bullet-proof vest and carrying a bag containing the explosives.

Cullum says the pipe bomb could have caused injuries or death. He says another bag found near Day School was not a threat.

Police launched a “grid search” for any other devices or evidence in the area.

Loving faces preliminary charges of possession, manufacturing and transporting an explosive, criminal recklessness while armed with a deadly weapon, false reporting, and arson. He was taken to the Vanderburgh County jail.

The blaze at Sugar Mill Creek apartments – where Loving lives -- damaged two units. Nobody was injured.
