LST Moved To Celebrate D-Day Anniversary

John Gibson

LST 325 has temporarily moved to where officials hope to permanently dock the ship on Evansville’s riverfront.

The World War II ship made the temporary move to the former site of the Tropicana riverboat for the 75th anniversary of D-Day.

A ceremony is planned aboard the ship from 9:00 until 1:00 tomorrow (Thur), and free tours of the ship will be offered from 1:00pm to 5:00pm Thursday, and 9:00 to 5:00 Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

LST 325 was among the giant allied flotilla that landed in Nazi-occupied France on June 6th, 1944 – changing the course of World War II in Europe.

These days, the ship is usually docked off Waterworks Road, by Inland Marina.

Plans are in the works to permanently move the historic vessel to the more prominent spot off Riverside Drive.

D-Day events include a performance by an Air Force band aboard the ship and a Big Band gala Saturday evening at the Tropicana Events Center.
