A suspect got away from Vanderburgh County sheriff's deputies Monday, but couldn't escape a K-9 officer.
A suspect who managed to get away from police three times wasn't fast enough to outrun a canine officer Monday afternoon.
A release from the Vanderburgh County sheriff's office says thirty-one year old Bret Wayne Weir was a wanted felon. Because Weir had a history of running when facing arrest, they decided to try to block his vehicle in the driveway of a home in the Pleasant Ridge Mobile Homes Estates off North Green River Road Monday afternoon.
Weir managed to get away from the deputies by driving through a grass lot and returning to the street. After a short chase, he left the vehicle and started running. An Evansville Police Department canine caught Weir in a wooded area west of the trailer park.
Monday's incident was the third time officers have had to chase Weir to arrest him, but it was the only time he was actually caught. According to the release, Weir was in a stolen vehicle when he drove away from a deputy in September of 2017. He managed to get away that time. Then, in November of 2019, Evansville police and sheriff's deputies broke off a chase after Weir's driving became too dangerous to pursue him.
Weir faces two felony counts of resisting law enforcement, two counts of reckless driving and a single misdemeanor count of conversion.
