Jehovah's Witnesses: all are welcome

A spokesman for Jehovah’s Witnesses says the group is not concerned about Indiana’s controversial religious objections law.

The group is conducting its annual convention in Evansville, with a second weekend of sessions beginning Friday at the Ford Center.

Coordinator Harvey Johnson tells WNIN that RFRA is not a factor, and he says everyone's welcome at the convention.

Evansville has hosted a Jehovah’s Witness convention each year since 2003. Johnson says the group likes what he calls the city's "warm environment" and has no plans to move it to another city.

Johnson says 4,800 people attended last weekend. They hope to top 5,000 this weekend. The sessions begin at 9:20 a.m. each day and are open to the public.

The Indiana legislature approved RFRA and Governor Pence signed it in March, but a public outcry forced legislators to amend the bill and clarify that it doesn’t allow discrimination against the LGBT community.
