Former Councilman, Commissioner Melcher Dead at 73

Sunset Funeral Home

A man who was a fixture in Evansville and Vanderburgh County government has died.

Stephen Melcher served in many roles over the years, including on the city council and the county commission.

The longtime Democrat switched to the Republican Party in recent years.

On Facebook, Mayor Lloyd Winnecke said he was saddened by Melcher’s passing. He said Melcher “had a sincere heart for service and served our city with distinction for many years.”

Winnecke called Melcher a man of his word who tried to “always do the right thing.”

Winnecke and Melcher served together as Vanderburgh County Commissioners.

Sunset Funeral Home will host services for the 73-year-old Melcher next Tuesday.
