EVSC Recommends But Doesn't Mandate Masks

File

The Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation says masks are recommended but not required for the upcoming school year – at least for now.

In a podcast released Thursday afternoon, EVSC Superintendent David Smith said he was concerned about rising COVID-19 infections amid the delta variant.

But he said the school district will follow CDC and state guidelines, “strongly” recommending masks for those who are not vaccinated but not requiring them.

Federal guidelines do require masks on school buses.

Smith cautioned the policy on Aug. 9 – when schools open -- might be “very different,” depending on COVID data.

He said the current opening plan weighs the “educational outcomes” of students with a need to keep them in a safe environment.
