EVSC Raises Possibility of Returning to Virtual Instruction

Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation officials are raising concerns about being able to continue with in-person instruction because of the surge of COVID infections linked to the Delta variant.

At the EVSC board’s regular meeting Monday, Superintendent David Smith was briefing the board on the issues discussed at an earlier town hall meeting.

On the board’s audio stream carried on WPSR, Dr. Smith reiterated what has become a point of pride for the EVSC- that they were able to remain open for in-person instruction during the entire last school year.

And then, he dropped this line-

“I will tell you that I am concerned about being able to do that again this year.”

Dr. Smith went on to discuss events like high school football games this fall.

“If these numbers continue to rise, then I think additional mitigation measures will be put in place by the Vanderburgh County Health Department or the EVSC.  I’m thinking specifically even in an outdoor venue.  We can’t folks packed in with one another if they are not part of the family.”

A request for comment on whether the EVSC is planning to return to virtual instruction, or if there are any scenarios that may require them to close schools was not returned Monday evening.
