The Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library (EVPL) isn’t backing down from its decision to host Drag Queen Story Hour. The library issued a statement Thursday afternoon, two days after a discussion of the event at a meeting of county commissioners.

The library's statement is in direct response to comments by county commissioner Cheryl Musgrave, who said at the Tuesday meeting she would consider cutting county funding to the library.

Musgrave also implied that she wanted the library’s executive director fired.

The library says it takes these comments seriously and is encouraging the public and politicians to familiarize themselves with the theories behind library science. The statement on Twitter includes links to a handful of resources.

EVPL also says it has a safety plan in place. That’s in response to commissioner Jeff Hatfield, who urged the library to cancel the event for safety reasons.

The story hour is still scheduled for Feb. 23 at North Park Library.
