Evansville Woman Arrested In Husband's Stabbing Death

An Evansville woman is in jail after authorities say she killed her husband.

Wendy Payne, 51, was booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail on a single count of murder.

According to a press release from the sheriff’s office, deputies responded to a 911 call shortly after six Saturday evening. A woman allegedly told dispatchers she had she stabbed her husband and needed police and medical assistance.

When deputies arrived, the sheriff’s office says they found Payne covered in blood.

The sheriff’s office says a deputy then found her husband lying on the kitchen floor. Edward Payne had apparently been stabbed in the chest, and a large kitchen knife was reportedly found lying near his body.

The sheriff’s office says he showed no signs of life and that emergency personnel were unable to revive him.

While en route to an interview with detectives, Wendy Payne allegedly said multiple times that she’s going to jail for murder.

But during the interview, the sheriff’s office says she invoked her right to remain silent.

An initial court appearance is scheduled for later this week.
