EPD: Man Shoots Self During Struggle with Officer

File

A man was taken to a hospital after Evansville Police say he shot himself during a struggle with an officer.

The EPD says an off-duty sheriff’s deputy reported a male subject wanted on a felony warrant walking in the area of S. Bosse Avenue on Evansville’s West Side at about 5:30 Tuesday evening.

In a release, Police Officer Taylor Merriss said police tracked the man to a home in the 1800 block of S. Werner Ave.

Police said they made contact with the home owner, while the male suspect ran out the rear of the house.

The EPD said the man began fighting with an officer, reached into his waistband and pull out a handgun.

After a brief struggle, police said the man used the weapon on himself.

The EPD said officers rendered aid to the man, who was still alive on the scene.

AMR took him to the hospital.

Authorities have not released his name.
