Elderly resident charged with arson

EPD

Police have arrested a man for allegedly trying to set fire to a senior housing facility on Evansville’s West Side.

Firefighters were dispatched to White Oak Manor at 509 N. St. Joe Avenue on Sunday.

In a news release, the EPD said the fire department found three separate locations in the building as origins of an attempted arson: a trash can in the first floor lobby, the second floor laundry room, and a trash can in the second floor stairwell.

Police say officers checked security footage from the building and determined the suspect was 72-year-old James Madden.

Madden lives at White Oak Manor and was taken to EPD headquarters, where police say he confessed to the allegations against him.

Madden is being held in the Vanderburgh County jail on a felony charge of arson.

There was no word of any injuries.
