COVID Precautions Planned for Labor Day Celebration

The mayor of Boonville has issued a statement ahead of the 135th Labor Day Association event saying Covid-19 precautions like masking and social distancing will be mandated.

Despite being in the state dashboard’s Covid-19 red category on and off for weeks, Gibson County’s Labor Day Association plans to go ahead with the traditional parade, pageants and other celebrations this weekend.

But in light of the county’s struggle with the virus, Mayor Charlie Wyatt is mandating that attendees and participants wear masks and socially distance, especially while watching pageants in the Toyota Event Center and riding shuttle buses.

In the statement, Mayor Wyatt expressed particular concern over the safety of the bus drivers - saying Gibson County School buses will be driven by Gibson County bus drivers. Area schools are already seeing a severe shortage of bus drivers because of the pandemic.

The Covid-19 precautions are in line with the Gibson County Health Department recommendations.

Last year, the association was only able to put on a parade, but this year, even with high numbers of Covid infections, the event has a packed schedule from Friday to Monday.
