Vanderburgh Health Department Offers Vaccine "Back-up List"

Sarah Kuper

COVID-19 vaccinations are underway in the tri-state and, though the shots are only available to certain priority groups, health officials want to be sure no doses are wasted. This means the Vanderburgh County Health Department is offering sign-ups to a back-up list in case there are extra doses at the end of the day.

Currently in Indiana, the COVID-19 vaccine is available for health care workers, long-term care residents, first responders and those 70 and older. But there may be a way to get the shot even if you don't meet those criteria.

The Vanderburgh County Health Department is now offering sign-ups to place your name on a "back up list" if you are 65 and older or have certain medical conditions like diabetes, COPD, kidney disease or a heart condition.

Those signed up could receive a call to come get a shot if there are leftover doses at the end of the day. You must be able to get to the vaccination location within 30 minutes of getting a phone call.

The health department states the sign up is not a first-come, first serve system but rather, people will be prioritized based on age and health condition.
