The hardest hit county in the area was Gibson County, where four new deaths were announced on the Indiana health department’s Monday dashboard.
The Gibson County toll reached 38.
Vanderburgh County’s death toll rose by one to 140, and Warrick County saw a new fatality, raising its toll to 77.
New infections continued to soar in Vanderburgh, where the state recorded 179 new cases.
Across southwest Indiana, the number of hospitalized COVID patients rose to 274 while the percentage of available intensive care beds improved to 21 percent in the 12-county region.
Statewide, the state department of health recorded 42 new COVID-related deaths and 5,700 new infections.
Indiana’s confirmed death toll is just shy of 6,000. Another 298 are considered “probable” COVID deaths.
Meanwhile, the Green River District Health Department announced one new fatality in Henderson County, along with 123 new infections in its seven-county region.
48 COVID patients were in the hospital.
The department recorded 18 COVID deaths last week.
