WNIN- Best Use of Radio Sound

WNIN-FM Evansville, Metro Division

Best Use of Radio Sound

In 2018, WNIN embarked on a months-long reporting project to tell an important story of Evansville’s history that was previously ignored. This story of triumph and tragedy in World War One became the story of a family’s love over generations that resulted in a just outcome for fallen soldier.

Our production of Chester and Gertrude (At War) had many elements. In this entry, reporter Steve Burger uses natural sound and interviews to merge the stories of two family members treading the same ground a century apart in northern France.

Nancy Hasting of Posey County, Indiana went to France in 2018 to trace the steps of her great uncle, U.S. Army sergeant Chester Schulz as he took part in what remains the largest battle in our nation’s history, the Meuse-Argonne Offensive that prompted Germany’s surrender in World War One. With the help of two local experts, Richard Tucker and Chris Sims, we were able to pinpoint with remarkable accuracy the path and timing of the battle and Chester Schulz’s participation in it. Our journey ends on a hillside on the outskirts of Sedan, France with a reminder of the high cost of war.

We hope you enjoy our production as much as we enjoyed creating it. We ask your support for the high honor of an Associated Press Award for this project.
