Vanderburgh County will celebrate its 200th birthday next year. Even with several months to go before 2018, County Commissioners have already started planning the festivities.
Vanderburgh County Commissioners voted unanimously to create the County Bicentennial Committee during their June 6 meeting. Commission President Bruce Ungethiem proposed the committee to celebrate the county’s history.
“On Jan. 7 of 2018, Vanderburgh County will be 200 years old so we are initiating a Bicentennial Committee to look into how we need to celebrate that 200 years being in business,” he said.
The commissioners approved the new committee, giving them 10,000 dollars in seed money from the county’s river boat funds.
Although he did not give any details, Ungethiem said at the meeting that he’s already spoken with members of the new committee and so far, he likes what he’s heard.
“These gals have already got a half a dozen ideas that I like already in their heads,” he said.
The commissioners encouraged anyone interested in helping to contact Kristin Comer at kcomer@vanderbughgov.org or by calling 812-435-5241.
