Organization Proposes Solidarity Blackout for June 13th

DAACE

On June 13th, CenterPoint Energy will end its Covid-era moratorium on shutting off power to those who haven’t paid their bill.

The public movement called Direct Action Against CenterPoint Energy wants members of the public who are not going to be affected to show solidarity with those whose homes will go dark, by shutting off their power on that date.

They invite people and businesses to participate as safely as they can, by eliminating or minimizing energy usage. Organizers say it is an opportunity to reflect on how hard it is to live without electricity and to keep in mind those who will have no choice starting June 13th.

With this Solidarity Blackout, DAACE hopes to send the message that CenterPoint Energy is not a partner in this region’s success but rather a utility company dramatically raising rates to earn record profits – even while fuel costs, inflation and housing costs affect their most vulnerable customers.

For more information on the protest, find Direct Action Against CenterPoint Energy on Facebook.
