Police looking at interstate theft ring in chase, escape

File

The incident forced officials to delay school in Mt. Vernon Tuesday.

It started just after three a.m. when Evansville police officers responded to a burglary alarm at a Regions Bank ATM on Eagle Crest Boulevard on Evansville’s far East Side.

Police began chasing a vehicle shortly after, eventually ending up in Posey County where the driver wrecked the car and fled on foot.

A manhunt came up empty-handed, but forced officials to put Mt. Vernon schools on a two hour delay because of the possibility that the escaped driver could be armed.

In a release, police say they believe the attempted burglary is part of a string of such incidents across the Midwest by an organized ring. They are working with the FBI on this case and others. They’re asking if anyone saw the incident or has any information to call Evansville police 812-436-7979.
