Police have arrested a total of six people in connection with the death of an Evansville child.

The three-year-old was found deceased on a couch inside the child’s grandparents’ house at 606 E. Michigan on Wednesday.

Two more young children were in the home and needed medical help after their mother, 20-year-old Makaylee Opperman, said they had possibly ingested fentanyl pills at her East Side home.

Officers and detectives went to the address on E. Sycamore, where they say they found a four-year-old child inside with no adult supervision.

Police said they also found more than 5,000 suspected powerful fentanyl pills.

Police arrested the victim’s mother along with the child’s grandparents who live on E. Michigan, 32-year-old Amber Opperman, and 39-year-old Brandon Opperman.

They each face a charge of Neglect of a Dependent Causing Death.

Police also arrested another woman who lived at the home on E. Sycamore, 23-year-old Jazmynn Brown, along with 22-year-old Allison Smithler on neglect charges.

33-year-old Arcinial Watt was arrested on two counts of dealing a controlled substance.

The child’s name was not released. The coroner’s office will determine the cause of the child’s death.

In a release, EPD Sgt. Anna Gray called the case “very tragic” and that more children could have died.
