A new housing complex in Evansville’s Jacobsville neighborhood is nearing completion.
The 180-unit Forge on Main at N. Main and Franklin streets plans to open its first apartment building next month, with all the units opening by March.
Matt Gaddis of developer House Investments says ten percent of the complex will provide low income housing, while the rest will offer affordable “workforce housing.”
"Within a half-mile you have CenterPoint Energy, Deaconess, Berry Global, and multiple other employers. And so we're excited about giving all of those employees an opportunity to live, work and play in Jacobsville."
The apartments are being built on the former site of a grocery store, and Gaddis says the effort continues to attract a new market to Forge on Main’s first-floor commercial space.
"We're signing on with another consultant to hopefully give us a better way to attract a grocer. We've been working 0n it since we announced this project. So far, no luck but we've not given up."
The City of Evansville provided $1.5 million for the $28 million project, which Metro Development Director Kelley Coures says is a good investment.
"Well, it's one more step towards revitalization, re-population, and bringing this neighborhood back to what it was many years ago."
