An Evansville coaching legend who died in 2019 will be honored Friday for his years of service to Central High School and the community.
The Friday Night Lights will shine on Central High School’s football field as the Bears take on the Harrison Warriors. But not before a special ceremony dedicating the field to former coach Mike Owen.
The EVSC Foundation, former players, alumni, family and local businesses raised more than $50,000 to make Coach Owen Field a reality.
The field will bear his name because of the decades he spent coaching and mentoring students and his contributions to the Evansville community. Also an accomplished tennis player, he spent many years coaching girls’ tennis and other sports at Central before coaching football.
Owen was also taught business at the school. He retired from coaching in 2006 and passed away in 2019. According to his obituary, the coach didn’t miss a Central High School football game for 40 years.
The ceremony will begin at 6:30pm.
