The Vanderburgh County Solid Waste Management District is encouraging residents to show-up this Saturday at the Civic Center parking lot for Tox-Away Day.
After many months of liberally spraying household cleaners on every surface users are bound to have empty bottles and canisters to throw out.
But according to waste management officials, tossing them in the kitchen trash is a big no-no.
Household hazardous waste must be disposed of in a safe way.
That’s why the Vanderburgh County waste management department is holding a Tox-Away Day on Saturday at the civic center starting at 9 a.m.
The list of household hazardous waste items is long, and you may be surprised to find out what you shouldn’t be throwing away:
Pesticide and herbicide sprays, household cleaners and chemicals, aerosol cans, oil-based paint cans, pharmaceuticals, florescent lightbulbs and motor oil cans.
Tox-Away day is a good time to clean out kitchen and garage shelves but the department says it is not the day to throw out old electronics or explosive material including ammunition. Officials say the program is not for businesses or households outside of Vanderburgh County.
