Fiber Connections Coming for Rural Vanderburgh County

evansville.gov

Vanderburgh County and AT&T have partnered to bring broadband to rural areas in Vanderburgh County.   It means that homes and businesses in some areas will go from no service to fiber optic connections with gigabit speeds for broadband access.

The numbers are impressive.

The total cost of the project is $39.6 million, of which AT & T will pay $29.7 million. The public funding of nearly $10 million comes from federal stimulus funds through the American Rescue Plan Act.

In all, about 20,000 rural Vanderburgh County homes and businesses will get fiber connections of two gigabits per second for homes and five gigabits for businesses.

Commissioner Cheryl Musgrave put the project into perspective over the commission’s web feed.

“It is going to put Vanderburgh County, not just in the forefront for the state, but for the nation. This is incredible.”

Musgrave was given credit for much of the work to get the project finalized by her fellow commissioners. The project is expected to be complete in two years.
