The City of Evansville has filed its response to raise water rates to pay for a new water treatment plant, in a case before the Indiana Utilities Regulatory Commission.
Earlier this month, the Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor filed a response to a proposed water rate increase, saying the new water plant doesn’t need to be as large as they’ve proposed. They also said local water users cannot afford the thirty three percent rate hike to pay for it.
Evansville Water and Sewer Utility Executive Director Lane Young says the two sides do agree on one thing.
“They know we need this new plant now. There’s not an argument around that. And I believe we’ve demonstrated to them that fifty million gallons would be the prudent and wise decision.”
The two sides have thirty days to come to an agreement and present it to the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission, which will decide the amount of the water rate increase.
