As Labor Day weekend approaches, Indiana law enforcement is asking motorists to plan ahead if their weekend celebration involves alcohol. WNIN’s Sarah Kuper has more on the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” program.
From now until Labor Day, Evansville police will be increasing patrols and showing zero tolerance for anyone caught driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
According to a release, drunken driving incidents are on the rise in Indiana, particularly occurring around holidays like Labor Day.
While increased patrols may catch drunk drivers, officials say prevention is up to the driver’s behavior. They say one way to avoid driving under the influence is to make a plan before celebrations for how to get home.
Legal consequences for driving under the influence can include fines, jail time and loss of license.
Officials also want to remind the public that impaired driving can also include illegal and some prescription drugs that cause poor judgment and slow reaction times.
If you encounter an impaired driver on the road, officials ask that you call 9-1-1.
