Water Rate Hearing set for Thursday at UE

File

A hearing on proposed water rate increases is set for Thursday evening at the University of Evansville.

The Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor will conduct the hearing at UE’s Shanklin Theatre starting at 6:00 p.m.

The hearing was originally planned for USI last week.

The agency will hear public testimony on proposed rate increases that would pay for a new water treatment plant in Evansville.

Parts of the current facility at 1301 Waterworks Road date back to the 1890s.

The new plant would be built across the road on the current site of the city garage, which would have to be relocated.

Construction of the new plant, along with the replacement of water lines, totals $220 million.

To cover the costs, the average water customer currently paying about $40 a month would pay about $54 a month by 2026.

Officials say the biggest monthly increase in any of the years would be about $3.

The office of utility counselor is also accepting written comments on the proposal via mail and online through Friday.
