Council Votes Down Another National Issue Resolution

evansville.gov

Citing their inability to influence what is essentially a national issue, Evansville City Council members voted down a pro-life resolution Monday evening.

For the second time in the past three council meetings, Fifth Ward Councilor Justin Elpers brought a national issue before the council. And for the second time, it was soundly defeated.

The earlier resolution opposed vaccine mandates, after the council had been advised that state law would prohibit them from issuing such a mandate. This one woould say that,  “E” is for everyone, even the pre-born.”

Council President Ron Beane expressed frustration over the council spending time on issues over which they have no jurisdiction.

“I have a real hard time supporting this, when we have nothing to do with this, and it’s brought to us in a fashion to make it a public display to city council, which I think is disrespectful to city council, to the chambers and to the City of Evansville, to ask us to weigh in something that we have absolutely no authority on.”

The resolution was voted down 5-2, with Councilors Elpers and Jonathan Weaver voting in favor. Councilors Missy Mosby and Jim Brinkmeyer did not attend the meeting.
