The state of Indiana is sending one million dollars to eleven food banks across the state.
Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch and the Indiana State Department of Agriculture announced the distribution of funds approved by the General Assembly to support efforts helping those who are food insecure.
In a release, Crouch said the funding has more than tripled from years past.
Among the eleven agencies receiving state money is the Tri-State Food Bank in Evansville.
The local food bank was awarded more than $61,000.
The group Feeding Indiana’s Hungry says nearly 1.2 million Hoosiers were food insecure at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In children, the risk was even higher with one in every four children being at risk of hunger.
