An important piece of aviation history is on display at the Evansville Wartime Museum through the weekend.

One of only five remaining B-17 bombers still flying is on display at the Evansville Wartime Museum at Regional Airport this weekend.

Tours are available for a fee, which includes access to the museum displays of P-47 aircraft and an LST 325 Higgins Boat.

Flights are available on the B-17. On Thursday, members of the media were taken on a short flight down to the riverfront.

The B-17, nicknamed "Texas Raiders" was built at the end of World War Two and did not see combat. It served with the U.S. Navy as a PB-1W, an early version of the Airborne Early Warning and Control (AWACS) aircraft. It was purchased by what is now known as the Commemorative Air Force in 1967 and was restored to its original configuration as a B-17.
