Treacherous road conditions forced most school systems in the Evansville area to either cancel classes or conduct an e-learning day on Thursday.
The announcements began rolling in Wednesday afternoon as more freezing rain and sleet put additional ice on roadways, following a wintry mix Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
About half of the school systems that cancelled classes deployed virtual learning days, which became common during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The National Weather Service recorded nearly a half-inch of precipitation in Evansville since early Wednesday, most of it in the form of freezing rain.
The Evansville area saw a little snow overnight, and more is possible Thursday.
Forecasters are still predicting colder temperatures this weekend, with a high on Sunday in the teens, and a low Sunday night in single digits.
And as the ferocious February continues, the weather service is predicting accumulating snow in the area Sunday night and Monday.
