The Evansville area is now under a Winter Storm Warning.
The National Weather Service upgraded Evansville and all of southwest Indiana to a Winter Storm Warning with up to 0.5" of sleet and another 0.1" of ice accumulation through Thursday morning.
The move followed the service expanding the Ice Storm Warning to all of western Kentucky.
Much of southeast Illinois remains under a Winter Weather Advisory.
Both warnings and the advisory are in effect through Thursday, in what forecasters are calling a “prolonged icing event.”
Freezing rain and sleet led to numerous accidents in the Tri-State Wednesday morning, and many school systems cancelled classes or employed a virtual learning day.
More frozen precipitation moved in to the area Wednesday afternoon.
The weather service predicts significant ice accumulations will produce “treacherous, potentially life-threatening travel conditions through Thursday morning.”
The thickest ice accumulations are expected in western Kentucky, but a wintry mix is forecast to cause hazardous driving conditions throughout the Tri-State.
