The project to bring more water to the north side and the county will take about a year.
The project will install a three foot diameter water main under First Avenue from Morgan Avenue south of Diamond to Ivy Tech. Smaller water lines will also be installed along and west of First Avenue.
Work will begin later this month and continue into early 2022. Mike Labitzke is the director of the program management office of the Evansville Water and Sewer Utility. He outlined what drivers can expect when construction gets underway in March.
“The construction of the water line is going to happen, basically right up the center of the street," Labitzke says, "That’s the only space that’s available in the corridor to install a pipe of this size. So, left turns will be restricted along First Avenue during that time.”
Labitzke says at least one lane of traffic will remain open in each direction on First Avenue throughout the project.
