The National Weather Service says a wintry mix is possible in the Evansville area Wednesday night, as the temperature dips to near the freezing mark.

The leading edge of the precipitation is expected to be mainly snow and sleet, with snow behind it.

But after midnight, forecasters say the leading edge may lean more toward freezing rain.

Forecasters say minor ice accumulations are possible in the Tri-State.

Minor snow amounts are forecast for southern Illinois and southwestern Indiana.

The weather service says the wintry weather will be followed by more rain, possibly heavy, with thunderstorms possible Thursday afternoon through New Year’s morning.

Rainfall totals of up to two inches are possible in the Evansville area.

Owensboro and Madisonville could see up to three inches of rain.
