Area COVID Death Toll Surges by 16; 196 New Cases in Vanderburgh Co.

The COVID surge continues with 16 new deaths reported in southwest Indiana and western Kentucky.

The Indiana State Department of Health announced five new fatalities in Vanderburgh County, three in Gibson County, two in Posey County, two in Dubois County, one in Warrick County, and one in Pike County.

Vanderburgh’s death toll since the pandemic began climbed to 134. The agency also reported nearly 200 new infections in the county.

The number of hospitalized COVID patients in southwest Indiana rose to 275, with the percentage of available intensive care beds down to about 13 percent.

Statewide, 91 new COVID-related deaths and more than 6,600 new infections were announced on the Wednesday dashboard.

Two more COVID-related deaths were reported in western Kentucky.

The Green River District Health Department said the fatalities were from Henderson and Union counties.

The department recorded 185 new infections in its seven-county district. 96 of the new cases were in Daviess County.
