Deaconess Health System has received an allotment of a newly-released antibody treatment for COVID-19.
The drug, known by the shortened name BAM, received emergency use authorization from the FDA last week.
In a release, the Evansville-based health system said Indiana received 2,750 initial doses, with Deaconess receiving 180 doses.
BAM is used to treat mild-to-moderate COVID-19 in patients who are at risk of progressing to severe COVID-19.
This treatment is only given via infusion, and Deaconess says it can treat up to 33 patients a day.
Deaconess Clinic Chief Medical Officer Dr. Brad Scheu said its pharmacy and infusion team moved quickly to set up a new location and process, and began treating patients Friday afternoon.
