Vectren says construction is underway on a solar array in Spencer County.

In a release, the Evansville-based utility company said the engineering phase of the project in Troy wrapped up earlier this year, setting the stage for Burns & McDonnell to begin construction.

The 50-megawatt solar array is expected to be fully operational in early 2021, and will generate enough electricity to power more than 12,000 households per year.

CenterPoint Energy Senior Vice President Steve Greenley calls it an important project in the “continued evolution” of the utility’s generation fleet -- adding more renewable energy sources to its portfolio.

Texas-based CenterPoint owns Vectren.

Greenley said Burns & McDonnell has a long history of delivering projects on time and on budget, while working safely.
