COVID-related deaths and infections continue to surge in southwest Indiana and western Kentucky.
The Indiana State Department of Health reported two new fatalities in Vanderburgh County, one in Warrick County, another in Posey County, and one in Dubois County on its Thursday dashboard.
The COVID death toll rose to 72 in Vanderburgh, 66 in Warrick, 27 in Dubois, and eight in Posey County.
Vanderburgh also saw a single-day record for new infections: 137.
The number of hospitalized COVID patients in southwest Indiana edged up to 159, with just 19 percent of intensive care beds available in the 12-county region.
Statewide, the agency recorded 33 new fatalities, pushing the official toll above 4,000. Another 236 are considered “probable” COVID deaths.
More than 3,600 new infections were reported across Indiana in a single day.
Meanwhile, the Green River District Health Department announced a new death in Daviess County and another in McLean County.
The seven-county district reported 65 new infections, and 25 COVID patients in the hospital.
