File

Attendance at indoor winter sporting events at local schools will be limited to two spectators per participant.

Evansville Vanderburgh School Superintendent David Smith made the announcement Wednesday afternoon at Bosse High School.

Smith said the goal is to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and “keep our students, our athletes, our families, and staff in a very safe environment."

EVSC Athletic Director Andy Owen team members, cheerleaders, and student managers are included in the policy of two spectators per participant.

The new policy applies to boys and girls basketball as well as wrestling.

School swimming and diving events at Lloyd Pool will not accommodate spectators.

The leaders of Evansville Catholic schools, Evansville Christian School, and Evansville Day School collaborated on the new policy.

Mayor Lloyd Winnecke and Vanderburgh County Health Department Administrator Joe Gries also attended Wednesday’s announcement, which followed recent surges in COVID deaths and infections in the region.
