Vanderburgh's COVID Death Toll Surges to 60; 4 More Deaths in SW Indiana

File

Vanderburgh County has seen its deadliest day of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Indiana State Department of Health announced a startling ten new deaths in the county, pushing the toll since March from 50 to 60 in a single day.

The agency’s Tuesday report also added 66 new infections in Vanderburgh County.

The spike comes less than a week after the county’s health board unanimously recommended stricter guidelines for social gatherings, restaurants, and bars.

City and county leaders rejected the tougher restrictions, but the city of Evansville has reduced the number of people allowed at social gatherings to 125, unless permitted by the health department.

Warrick, Posey, Pike, and Dubois counties each reported one new COVID-related fatality on the Tuesday dashboard.

178 COVID patients were hospitalized in southwest Indiana, with less than 24 percent of intensive care beds available in the 12-county region.

Across Indiana, 48 new COVID-related deaths were recorded with more than 1,500 new infections.

In western Kentucky, the Green River District Health Department reported the 27th fatality in Daviess County.

72 new infections were reported across the seven-county district.
