With just a little over a month to go in the 2020 census count, Evansville officials are scrambling to get people to fill out census information without waiting for someone to knock on their door.
Department of Metropolitan Development executive director Kelly Coures is in charge of the self-response effort for the city. He says while most of Evansville is on par with state census response averages, one critical area is not- Pigeon Township- where only about half of the residents have responded to the census.
Coures says especially in lower income areas like Pigeon Township, the census count means money. Federal funding for various assistance programs is tied to the census.
“So by not responding to the census, people are acting against their own self-interest.”
