Officials say a two-alarm fire that destroyed an Evansville plastics business started in a motor.

The Evansville Fire Department says Tuesday’s blaze at Green Tree Plastics was ignited by a blower motor used in the company’s production process.

EFD Division Chief Mike Larson said the fire appeared to be accidental, but was still under investigation.

Employees escaped the burning building at 1107 E. Virginia St. and firefighters battled the blaze from aerial trucks and from the ground.

Black smoke from the fire was visible for miles.

Larson said the blaze also damaged the neighboring I.E. Transportation business, when a wall from Green Tree collapsed.

Larson said two pieces of fire apparatus were slightly damaged, one from heat and the other in a minor traffic accident.

There were no injuries.
