Confusion and timing cited in move Monday evening.
Saying the mask ordinance, proposed earlier this month, wasn’t necessary right now, the council voted to table the matter at its regular meeting Monday evening.
Over the council’s live stream, Councilman Ron Beane said it’s clear that the council structure of approving ordinances is much slower than actions taken by Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb and Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke, For the time being, Beane said, those measures are the proper way to deal with the pandemic.
“I think it makes sense to just defer to the mayor and the governor to take the lead on that.”
In other business, the council voted to vacate an alley on the site of the former Buehler’s store on North Main so construction can move forward on a planned mixed use development there.
