Mayor Lloyd Winnecke’s mask mandate is now in effect.
People in Evansville are now required to wear a face covering in all indoor public spaces – including public transportation -- to help stop the spread of COVID-19.
Examples include individuals shopping or employees working in a retail store, patrons of a restaurant or entertainment venue when not seated at a table, or individuals waiting in the lobby of a doctor’s office.
The mask requirement also covers classrooms, unless students and faculty can be separated by six feet or more.
The mandate also includes school hallways and outdoor situations where social distancing is not possible.
There are numerous exemptions and no fines for violating the mayor’s mandate.
The Evansville City Council is considering a face mask mandate that includes fines of $50 to $100.
The mayor’s executive order lasts one week, with the mayor having the option to either renew it or cancel it on a week-by week basis.
It went into effect at 12:01 Wednesday morning.
