KY Officials: Panther Creek Bridge Beyond Repair, Needs Replacing

File

Kentucky officials say a bridge in Daviess County that was damaged a second time last week is beyond repair.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says when an oversized truck hit the Panther Creek Bridge on State Road 81, it struck every cross member along the top portion of the bridge.

In a release, the cabinet’s Chief District Engineer Deneatra Henderson said they’re trying to secure funding to replace the existing structure.

Henderson also said they’re trying to expedite the process.

The damage is similar to what happened in August 2019, but the heat-straitening technique used to repair the bridge then can’t be used again.

Engineers determined repairs would not be cost-effective compared to the cost of replacement.

Henderson hopes a temporary crossing can be built in the next few months.

In the meantime, traffic on Kentucky 81 in southern Daviess County is being routed along a marked detour.
