Read Evansville to Promote Summer Reading

File

An effort is launched to boost reading among young people this summer.

Summer is a time when students can experience learning loss. And in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, learning loss could be a bigger problem this summer.

But a group of community volunteers, educators, businesses, and youth agencies have established a project called Read Evansville.

In a release, the EVSC’s Patricia Weinzapfel says the goals are simple: to provide books for local students to read over the summer and to encourage them to read every day.

Read Evansville is joining with Feed Evansville to distribute the books.

Weinzapfel says volunteers will include books in food baskets, lunch sacks, and grocery boxes.

The group hopes to distribute 1,000 books a week over the summer to students of all age groups and reading levels.

Read Evansville will hold an online Barnes and Noble book fair starting Saturday, with proceeds going to the project.

You can also contribute online through the EVSC Foundation.
