Mesker Mourning Giraffe Death

File

Mesker Park Zoo and Botanic Garden is mourning the death of one of its giraffes.

The 19-year-old giraffe named Kizzie died unexpectedly on Tuesday.

Giraffes have a life expectancy in the mid-20's.

The cause of death is under investigation.

In a news release, Mesker said Kizzie lived at the zoo for more than 18 years, after arriving from Indianapolis in 2001.

The zoo said Kizzie "captured hearts, created playful memories, and captivated zoo guests and members alike with her joyful presence and spirit."

Two giraffes remain at Mesker. One is elderly for a giraffe -- 29-years-old – while the other is young – just two years old.
