University of Evansville mens basketball coach Walter McCarty has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into alleged violations of the school’s Title Nine policy.
In an email just after noon central time Friday, UE officials made the announcement that Walter McCarty has been put on administrative leave and that assistant coach Bennie Seltzer will take over as interim head coach.
An internal letter to University of Evansville staff and students was provided by the university in the email. The letter said that the university had received reports of unwelcome conduct by McCarty since his arrival at UE in March of 2018.
The letter goes on to say that McCarty was counseled about the behavior, but that a report of interactions with a member of the campus community received within the past two weeks prompted the move Friday.
Title IX is a federal law that prohibits sex discrimination at federally funded education institutions. Earlier this year, a race and sex discrimination lawsuit against the University of Evansville was settled out of court. However, UE theater professor Scott Lank was fired over the allegations in that case.
The university has retained a national law firm to investigate the claims against McCarty. This is a developing story. We will have more information as it becomes available.
